half circle

The Ardha Bindu (అర్ధబిందువు / ఁ), also known as the Ara-sunna (half circle), is used in Classical and Ancient Telugu to represent a soft, half-nasalized sound (లఘు ద్రుతము).
Unlike the full circle (Poorna Bindu / ం), which makes a strong nasal sound (like n or m), the Ardha Bindu modifies the vowel right before it by adding a subtle nasal hum through the nose.
Key Reasons & Rules for Using Ardha Bindu
1. Historical Sound Loss (Historical Shift)
In Old Telugu (prior to 1000 AD), words were pronounced with a full nasal consonant sound like న్ or ంగ్. Over time, as spoken Telugu evolved into Middle and Classical Telugu, that full nasal sound softened.
 * Classical grammarians introduced the ఁ symbol to mark that a full nasal sound (sunna) was once there, but should now be pronounced softly.
 * Example:
   * Oldest form: రాముండు (Rāmuṇḍu)
   * Classical/Poetic form: రాముఁడు (Rāmu~ḍu)
   * Modern form: రాముడు (Rāmuḍu)
2. Pronoun Suffixes (పురుష ప్రత్యయాలు)
In Classical poetry (Padyalu), singular masculine pronoun endings often required an Ardha Bindu:
 * వాఁడు (Vā~ḍu) – He
 * వీఁడు (Vī~ḍu) – This man
 * ఎవఁడు (Eva~ḍu) – Who
3. Dropped Nasal Suffixes in Verbs (ద్రుత లోపం)
When joining words in classical Telugu grammar (Sandhi), the trailing letter న్ (Drutamu) drops away and transforms into an Ardha Bindu attached to the verb:
 * చేసెన్ + పడు → చేసెం పడు → చేసెఁబడు (Chēse~baḍu)
 * చేసెం + చో → చేసెఁజొ (Chēse~jo)
4. Semantic Differentiation (పదాల అర్థభేదం)
In Classical Telugu dictionaries, the presence of an Ardha Bindu distinguishes two completely different words that would otherwise sound almost identical in modern speech:
 * ఏఁడు (Ē~ḍu) = Year | ఏడు (Ēḍu) = The number 7
 * కాఁచు (Kā~chu) = To boil/heat up | కాచు (Kāchu) = To protect
 * దాఁక (Dā~ka) = Until | దాక (Dāka) = Cooking pot
Why is it NOT used in Modern Written Telugu?
 * Vowel De-nasalization: Over the centuries, native Telugu speakers gradually dropped the half-nasal pronunciation altogether.
 * Simplified Script Reform: During the 20th century, Telugu written script was standardized for newspapers, printing presses, and modern literature. Since people no longer pronounced the half-nasal sound in spoken Telugu, the symbol ఁ was officially dropped from standard modern orthography to simplify writing and reading.
Today, Ardha Bindu is used strictly in Classical Literature (గ్రాంథిక భాష), Chandassu (poetic meter studies), and ancient text decipherment.
