 For Android Phones

WhatsApp data is stored locally on your phone and can be copied to your computer.

Method 1: Copy WhatsApp Folder Manually

  1. Connect your phone to your PC using a USB cable.

  2. Allow file transfer (MTP) on the phone.

  3. Open Internal Storage → look for a folder called WhatsApp (or Android/media/com.whatsapp in latest versions).

  4. Copy the entire WhatsApp folder to your computer or external drive.

    • Inside you’ll find:

      • /Databases/ → Chat backups (msgstore.db.crypt14 files).

      • /Media/ → All images, videos, documents, audio.

  5. This is your full local backup.

⚠️ Note: To restore chats, you’ll need to move the Databases folder back to the same location before reinstalling WhatsApp.

Method 2: Use WhatsApp Export Chats (for specific chats only)

  • Open any chat → Tap ⋮ (menu) → More → Export Chat.

  • You can choose with or without media.

  • Save it to your local drive or email.
    👉 Good for important chats, but not full backup.

Method 3: Use Third-Party Tools (PC Software)

Some tools (like iMazing, MobileTrans, iToolab WatsGo, Dr.Fone) let you:

  • Connect phone → Take complete WhatsApp backup → Save to local drive.
    These tools make restoration easier if you switch devices.

🔹 For iPhone

By default, WhatsApp uses iCloud, but you can also back up locally:

  1. Connect iPhone to PC.

  2. Use iTunes/Finder → Take a full encrypted iPhone backup to your PC.

    • This includes WhatsApp data.

  3. Alternatively, use tools like iMazing or iToolab → Backup WhatsApp only → Save locally.

✅ Best Option for Android: Manually copy the WhatsApp folder (Databases + Media).
✅ Best Option for iPhone: Use iTunes encrypted backup or a third-party tool.
